SKY ZONE WALDORF: FAMILY GUIDE

Our family has been jumping at our local Sky Zone for over ten years now. My kids love going as a special treat. However, this January we splurged and got membership so we could enjoy all the awesome programs all year long.  One thing I love about the Waldorf Sky Zone is that they are a business that values family by providing a space where loved ones of all ages can bond and play together. If there’s one thing I want my kids to remember about their childhood… its how much fun we had as a family and how mom and dad found time to play with them. In a way Sky Zone is a modern Neverland… “So come with me, where dreams are born, and time is never planned. Just think of happy things, and your heart will fly on wings, forever, in Never Never Land!”- J.M. Barrie. Here’s a look at what makes this place so fun!

Let me take you on a tour; whether you been or never been before. Follow me to the “second star to the right, and straight on till morning.” – J.M. Barrie. Once you’ve entered this modern day Neverland, you will see how the space is deceiving from the outside. Saying it’s huge on the inside is an understatement! Upon entering you first see a huge lobby, to the left is the trampoline park and if you walk around the hallway you found a dozen party rooms and large bathroom facilities with toddler changing tables.  If it is your first time visiting, first fill out a waiver form before arriving at home to save time or on the computer provided in the lobby. Next you’re ready for the check-in desk; where you can purchase a ticket or check-in with your membership. You will also need to bring along or buy a special pair of Sky Zone jump socks. You can keep these socks and use them again during your next visit.

After your socks are on and color coded jump band is around your wrist, you are ready to head to the trampoline park. “The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease for ever to be able to do it.” – J.M.Barrie. Feel like you are flying in the jump zone on the huge jump pad area. Put your slam dunk and basketball skills to the test in the hoops section.  Enjoy free falling in the giant foam pit. Show off your mad dodge ball skills. Currently the warrior course is closed for renovations but should be open and better then ever by summer 2024.

One thing I found is that the annual membership is a great deal. For $24.99 per month you can attend all the programs including: toddler time, homeschool jump, sensory Sunday, hoppy hour, open jump, glow jumps and other special programs. Since we come at least twice a month and most jumps/programs at $10-$15 per visit, after only two visits a month it pays for itself. You can also cancel your membership or put it on hold if you need to. Here are some details about the different programs:

  • LITTLE LEAPERS: This special program for little ones ages walking to 5 years old takes place on Tuesday & Thursdays 10AM-12PM. Check the calendar for special story times and events. Depending on day they have different themes like super hero day, donuts with dad or story time. ($10)
  • HOME SCHOOL JUMP: Hop in for Homeschool fun Tuesday & Thursday 12PM-2PM. Take this time to use as a credit for physical education and STEM on Thursdays! ($15)
  • HOPPY HOUR: Hoppy Hour takes place Tuesday thru Friday 4PM-6PM. (Offers a jump pass at half price.)
  • GLOW NIGHT: Trampoline fun in a neon wonderland. Family Glow: Friday night: 7PM-9PMand TEEN Glow: Saturday night:  8PM-9:15PM & 9:30PM-10:45PM

ICE! FAMILY GUIDE

Step into a wonderland of ICE! Where you will be dazzled by ice sculptured carved by expert artisans out of two million pounds of colorful ice. This years theme is the classic Claymation film “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.”  Walk through a winter wonderland filled with larger-than-life sculptures; even plunge down slides made entirely out of ice.  This annual holiday event runs now through December 31, 2023. I hope that this guide helps your family plan out and prepare for touring ICE! the coolest attraction around town.

WHAT IS ICE!?

ICE! is a spectacular ice display that showcases colorful, larger-than life ice sculptures. You will walk through a self guided tour of over two million pounds of colorful ice sculptures that are hand-carved.

Once you have suited up in your blue parka; you will make your way out to the tent where the magic unfolds. Inside the massive tent set at a chilling nine degrees, you get to admire the work of vibrant scenes that have come to life by talented artists. It took 35 artists over 12 hours a day for 30 days to bring these breath taking scenes to life. Be sure take time at the exhibit in the begin that offers information, videos and please touch centers that are great for kids.

This year’s ICE! display theme is Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. It feels like you are walking right into this classic holiday film! The carvers do a magnification job of capturing iconic scenes from the movie.

At the half way point, be sure to venture through the ice tunnel and zip down a slide. There are slides for both the tiny tots and big kids so that every can participate in this activity. Too go fast down the slide, be sure to lay back so the parka glides you down.

Take your time walking through each display. This year has signs in which you can read details about the story on pages at each scene. This a great way to practice reading skills if you have elementary aged kids. There are also interactive elements, such as a button that makes Rudolph’s nose glow bright! End your tour with a gorgeous view of the crystal clear nativity scene.

TIPS FOR ICE!

  • Ways to save- Military Discount are offered, get discount codes by following the Gaylord National Resort Facebook Page or catch a deal on Groupon. You can also purchase Gold pass that include: ICE! display, unlimited Ice Tubbing and Snoopy Scavenger Hunt. You save up to 30% by getting a platinum pass which includes: ICE! display, unlimited Ice Tubbing and Snoopy Scavenger Hunt, Snowball Blast, Gingerbread decorating, Ice Skating and the Mrs. Claus Traditions show.
  • Bundle Up- I’m sure it’s obvious that it will be cold. The ice needs to stay frozen! You will be provided with a warm blue parka with a hood. However, I highly recommend you bring along a hat, glove, and scarf. We even wore our personal jackets underneath to stay extra cozy. Be aware that the parkas do not have pockets, YOU WILL NEED GLOVES! Parkas come as small as size 2T. I recommend baby wearing your smallest baby and get a slightly bigger parka to button over the baby.
  • Bright Colors- Since every visitor is wearing the same blue parka; you will need a way to set your kids apart. I put my children in bright colored hats to make them more distinctive.
  • Don’t Rush- Over the years I have learned to take my time. If your kids have the attention span for it, visit each exhibit and admire what you see. Engage in conversations about what you see and take photos.
  • Interactive Exhibits- One of my kids favorite part of the adventure is the slide and tunnels. Take your time on these. You can go down the slide as many times as you want. Veterans tips, have one adult stays at the top and the other stay at the bottom to keep an eye on the kids. There is an attendant at the top to help as well.
  • Take Photos- Keep in mind that your camera or phone could freeze. That being said, I would take my camera out periodically to snap a few memorable shots.
  • Take advantage of parking validation. Park in the Gaylord Hotels Self Parking. Just show receipt of attending the event outside the winter village area. They will discount your ticket for three hours and under parking down to $17.
  • Check out the full range of Christmas on the Potomac events at Gaylord National Resort to ensure you hit all the extra activities!
  • Play Learn & Grow- Before you go watch videos about the making of ICE! – Link Here

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE…CHRISTMAS ON THE POTOMAC

National Harbor hosts a year-round line up of amazing events and super-fun activities for families — right on the gorgeous waterfront. See the Christmas on the Potomac Calendar for more information, dates and times of weekly events. Mostly every Saturday throughout the holiday you can catch Santa on the Carousel and at the Capital Wheel. As well as, see free movies on Sunday’s, witness the spectacular tree lighting daily and view fireworks on select nights. At The Gaylord be sure to go to the atrium to watch the Christmas Tree light show and stop by the lobby to see the gorgeous gingerbread display.

There are so many scrumptious restaurants. While we were visiting Christmas on the Potomac we ate at Red Stone Grill. The ribs and rotisserie chicken are amazing. Not to mention the kids menu is great and comes with a cool activity to keep the little’s entertained. I also always enjoy the view of the Potomac. Don’t miss out on riding the Capital Wheel for breath taking views and making extra special family memories.
