Details: Historic Sotterley and Southern Maryland Audubon Society invite you to come learn about identifying birds, how your smartphone can make you an identification expert, and how to properly use your binoculars. Immediately following the presentation, Dean Newman, an avid wildlife photographer, speaker, and veteran bird guide, will lead a walk around the Historic Sotterley grounds helping you put into practice what you learned. The presentation will begin promptly at 8 a.m. in the barn. Please bring binoculars and a field guide (don’t worry if you don’t have your own). Suggested to wear comfortable walking shoes and attire weather appropriate. For all levels of birdwatchers.

PUBLIC ARCHEOLOGY

Details: The program runs from 9 am to 3 pm, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, beginning on May 2nd and running through May 31st, 2024. Join us for field excavations and hands-on all-ages outdoor activities with the option for lab tours and lab work in the afternoons inside the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab (if available due to an upcoming construction project). Bring appropriate clothes for getting a little dirty and pack a lunch if you intend on staying all day! In the event of rain, all activities will take place in the lab.

ST CLEMENTS HERITAGE DAY

Details: Celebrate the history and heritage of St. Clement’s Island with tons of fun and FREE activities and programs for the whole family out on beautiful St. Clement's Island. Experience a day of history, wildlife and art, and take part in activities that include, games, lighthouse tours, traditional music and much more. Lots of related vendors will be on hand. Visitors will be able to take free water taxi rides out to the island for all the festivities.
Discover St. Clement’s Island State Park and its history as the site of Maryland’s first colonial landing in 1634. Enjoy the scenic and natural beauty of the island, Potomac River and waterfowl with a walk along the beach. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the pavilion or any of the tables dotting the island shore. The reconstructed Blackistone Lighthouse will be open and available for tours.

Details: Pre-school children ages 3-5 years old will have a blast putting on their sea legs and participating in nautical-themed games and activities! They'll even get a chance to voyage to the edge of the St. Mary’s River to explore the landscape and assist Maryland Dove crew in maneuvering a sail.
