Admission is free!
Join us for a special community art project inspired by the dream of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year, we invite a different artist to develop and lead a meaningful three-day project that results in an installation, which typically remains on display through the end of February. This year, view the nostalgic work of Pinkie Strother then work alongside her to create a clay figurine to add to the growing community diorama.
Special Gallery Exhibit— “Childhood Memories: The Art of Pinkie Strother” is a depiction of African-American culture in 1950s-60s Calvert County, Maryland. Consisting of paintings, drawings and sculptural dioramas and figurines, Pinkie celebrates the rural landscape and rich, vibrant community that shaped her life. Her work celebrates the spiritual foundation and family values of the time. Meet the artist, hear her recollections, and work alongside her during the 3-day MLK DAYS community art project!
In addition to the community art project, guests can also enjoy:
A Tent of Many Colors — the Communal Coloring Tent Returns!
The popular community coloring tent will transform the Murray Arts Building into gathering space that is both peaceful and inspiring. Step inside the tent of many colors and enjoy the therapeutic qualities of coloring! Coloring supplies will be available for use and all are welcome. Choose a design, find a seat, make a friend, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. A great space for all ages to enjoy.
Make-&-Take Project in the artLAB: Kindness Rocks!
Paint a positive message on a river stone and place it in a public space for a someone to discover and enjoy. Let’s highlight all of the wonderful values and positive messages Dr. King championed!
Gallery exhibits and the sculpture garden are open as well during the event!
