I would like to show case a few ideas for extra-curricular activities for kids by offering a new series called Around Town Tuesday. One Tuesday a month I will showcase a local indoor activity during the cold months. This month I will be sharing about SOMD Martial Arts.

Now that the weather is growing colder; I wanted to find an extra-curricular activity for my kids that is indoors.  I did some research and learned that Martial arts is not only an excellent physical outlet but it helps children boost their self esteem, gain better self discipline and control, enhances problem solving in social situations, teaches the importance of respecting others and encourages reaching goals based on hard work. Who doesn’t want their kids to learn all these amazing character traits?!? After reading about the benefits of TaeKwonDo; I decided to sign my two boys ages 5 and 7 up for a trial at SOMD  Martial Arts.

I’m so glad that we signed our boys up for Martial Arts, they have learned so much already in just a short months time span. The program offers classes by age and experience level. Students are encouraged to attend at least two classes a week to learn important skills used to pass monthly testing for stripes and belts.

Parents will be excited to hear that aside from the Martial Arts academy they have a full scale fitness center on campus at each location! Take a Zumba, Yoga, Boot Camp, Kettle Bell or Spin class or just simply work out at your own pace. It’s a perk to be able to workout while your child takes a class.

SOMD Martial Arts has two locations; one in La Plata and the other in Bryans Road. If you are interested in trying a class they offer a FREE trail class.
