This past Friday I had the chance to learn how to make a String Art Heart at my monthly MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) meeting. This activity is an inexpensive and cute way to decorate for Valentine’s Day and makes a great gift for loved ones too. Please keep in mind that young children will need supervision when hammering; we don’t want any little fingers smashed.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
- Small piece of wood
- 1- Pack of 1-inch nails
- Thin woven thread
- Hammer
- Scissors
- Print off of outline of a small heart
HOW TO MAKE YOUR STRING ART HEART:
- Lay out all your materials in a place to work on your project.
- Lay your heart print off on the wood. Tap to the top and bottom, in order to hold it in place.
- Next, hammer in your nails around the outline of the heart. Being careful to push the nail in straight. You will not need to hammer it in far, just enough to stick in the board.
- Once you have completed nailing in your nails in a pattern of a heart, gently remove the piece of paper.
- Now for the fun part! Tie the string to the nail at the point of the heart and begin weaving your string through the nails in a pattern of your own design.
- Once you are done tie the string to a nail and cut off access.
Stringing is great for strengthening dexterity. You can also make a variation of this using a paper plate for your preschooler. Punch holes in a paper plate using a hole puncher to make a heart shape and than string yarn through the holes. The Playful Parent posted a Spring variation of this idea click here for the tutorial.
