The political gridlock has extended the federal government shutdown to a record-setting 25 days and is still in counting. Southern Maryland business owners have announced ways they’d like to contribute to helping families who are going without paychecks. This article will have resources for furloughed families who live in Southern Maryland.
Growing up in a military family and now having a spouse who works for the Government; seeing the shut down and the effect it has on families is too close to home. There is a silver lining though to this difficult situation. And that silver lining is… our community pulls through and shows support to those in need. Southern Maryland has a heart of gold.
I had messages pouring in last night and this morning asking me to share resources with families. Moms With Tots shared about the Maryland Diaper Drive she started and that’s when it hit me. We need a list of what’s going on so southern Maryland families can see the support and resources out there for them. I will continue to collect information and add it here.
Charles County has specific programs for residents to help with paying bills and other financial assistance, see link for details.

Tuesday January 22, 2019 through Friday January 25, 2019 all furloughed employees who show their government ID will get 30% off on the buffet from 11 AM to 2 PM. Dine in only.
Charles Street Bakery is offering the”friends and family discount” along with a free cup of coffee to those of you who are furloughed due to the government shutdown. Come by, sit by the fire and relax. We have free wi-fi.
All day tomorrow, 1/17/19, Chevys is offering a free 2-item combo to those Federal Government employees who are affected by the shutdown.
This Thursday night, dinner is on us for Furlough Employees and their families. Alcohol and gratuity is not included.
