“People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day.”  — Winnie the Pooh

Everyone’s favorite Pooh Bear is back, this time in live action, in Disney’s Christopher Robin.  This is definitely the feel-good movie of the summer!  The Playful Parent gives it two thumbs up.  Just in case you have missed the hype, here’s a look at the trailer:

The Playful Parent was invited to attend a sneak preview before Disney’s Christopher Robin hits theaters on August 3, 2018, in order to share information, review and give general thoughts on the movie.

SPOLIER ALERT:  There are no spoilers in this article!  I will provide you with just a “smackerel” of information without dishing out too much of the plot.

My family has always been in love with the stories of A. A. Milne and his “Bear of Very Little Brain” and we have recently been reading one of the many books about his adventures thru the Hundred Acre Wood.  When we first learned about the live action film that follows an adult Christopher Robin, we lost ourselves in excitement.  Our daughter could only muster a single word, “POOH?!”  Fans of the books and of the cartoons will be happy to hear that both have been preserved in this wonderfully written story that takes us beyond the woods and into our own world of grownup respons-a-bil-a-bees.

There is truly something for everyone in this film.  For parents, we are taken into a world of what was, thru the imaginings of the children we used to be; reading and watching Pooh Bear and all of his friends again and again and again – a world we have long tried to hold with us dearly, but always seems just out of reach because we have been forced to grow up.  For children, this may be their very first trip into the Hundred Acre Wood where they will need to battle the dreaded heffalump and help to save their friends from the fierce woozle!

In Disney’s heartwarming live action adventure, the young boy who shared countless adventures with his stuffed animal friends in the Hundred Acre Wood has grown up and lost sight of what’s important in life.  Now it is up to his childhood friends to venture into our world and help Christopher Robin rediscover the joys of family life, the value of friendship and to appreciate the simple pleasure in life once again.

Disney’s Christopher Robin is directed by Marc Forster from a screenplay by Alex Ross Perry and Allison Schroeder and a story by Perry based on characters created by A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard. The film stars Ewan McGregor as Christopher Robin; Hayley Atwell as his wife Evelyn; Bronte Carmichael as his daughter Madeline; and Mark Gatiss as Keith Winslow, Robin’s boss. The film also features the voices of: Jim Cummings as Winnie the Pooh and Tigger; Brad Garrett as Eeyore; Toby Jones as Owl; Nick Mohammed as Piglet; Peter Capaldi as Rabbit; and Sophie Okonedo as Kanga.

This was our daughter’s first “expotition” to a movie theater and she was not disappointed.  From the very first “Pooh Bear!” to the very last “something” she was engaged and entertained.  Her attention only ever left the screen as she looked to us to tell us about the adventure that was unfolding before her very eyes.  Rated PG, this film was great for everyone in our family starting with our four year old daughter all the way to my thirty-five year old husband.  There was only one scene with an especially fierce heffalump that caused her to tell us that she was scared and cuddle into our arms for comfort and protection.  This movie is a great change of pace in a world full of action, adventure, and comic book characters running all over the world and galaxy and will leave you with a sense of joy that can only be seen through the eyes of a child.  Even if you know nothing of the many “expotitions” of Pooh Bear and his friends, remember this:

“Sometimes nothing leads to the best something.”
