Coming up this Friday March 2nd is the birthday of the beloved children’s author, Dr. Seuss and a very special holiday known as Read Across America! This special day is a great way to celebrate and discuss the importance of reading. This day was created to get kids of all ages excited about reading. In honor of the initiative, this weeks homemade monday is dedicated to Dr. Seuss’s birthday!

CAT IN THE HAT STACK

  • Red Cups/ White Cups of different sizes
  • Red/White Index Cards or Card Stock
  • Tape Measure
  • The Cat In The Hat Book

Instruction:

  1. First, prepare for the activity by pre-cutting squares using red and/or white index cards or card stock paper. You should cut the square to a size larger than the rim of the cup.
  2. Next, set up your supplies. Layout the paper squares and cups on a flat surface.
  3. Finally comes the fun part. Encourage your child to make the cat’s hat by staking them as high as they can! What happens if they use different sized cups or flip the cups upside down?
  4. You can count the number of cups stacked or use a measuring tape to track height.
  5. Talk to your little one about gravity and distribution of weight.

  • You can advance this project by adding letters to the cup to practice spelling words.

ONE FISH TWO FISH COUNTING GAME

Supplies:

  • Print-off or paper
  • Dice
  • Gold Fish or Swedish Fish
  • Writing utensil (pencil, crayon, marker, etc.)
  • One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish book by Dr. Seuss ONE FISH TWO FISH- JPEG.jpg

Directions:

  1. Print this free print-off or create your own by drawing four fish bowls on a sheet of paper.
  2. Have your little one roll the dice.
  3. Encourage them to place that many fish in the bowl.
  4. They can write the number of fish on the box in the fish bowl. DS- 1F2F EAT.jpg

Tips:

  • You can also work on colors with this activity. Have them color each box a different color than work on separating the various colored fish into the correct bowl.
  • As positive reinforcement your little one can eat the fish as you count the fish in the bowl together to see if they got their answer right!
  • I highly recommend reading the book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss.

GREEN EGGS & SLIME

Supplies:

  • 1/2 TBSP of Baking Soda
  • 1 TBSP of Contact Lens Solution
  • 4 fl oz of Elmer’s White School Glue
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Pom Pom
  • Green Easter EggDS- GEAH GOO.jpg

Instructions:

  1. Set out your supplies pre-measured.
  2. Pour out the entire contents of a 4oz of Elmer’s School Glue into the bowl
  3. Add 1/2 TBSP of Baking Soda and mix
  4. Add 1 TBSP of contact lens solution
  5. Mix until slime forms and it begins to get harder to mix
  6. Take the slime out and begin kneading with both of your hands
  7. If needed, add 1/4 TBSP Contact Lens Solution to make the slime less sticky
  8. Place a green pom pom in the center of the slime. DS- GEAH EGG.jpg

Tips:

  • Place in a green Easter Egg for storage.
  • Reading Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham is a must!
