HORSMON FARM: PLAYFUL PARENT GUIDE

One of the best parts about living is Southern Maryland is the opportunity to shop local. Just 8 miles south of Prince Frederick is where a charming little plantation named Horsmon Farm is located. Here you will find everything you need to decorate your front porch for the fall.  I feel like the flowers from a local nursery always last longer and are more vibrant. It’s a huge bonus that while shopping for festive fall decor you can spend quality family time at the Harvest Festival that lasts September through October. Every weekend fun activities such as; hayrides, pumpkin patch, petting zoo, sorghum maze and more are offered.

Our family visited on a sunny Sunday afternoon and it was the perfect relaxing family outing. If you are looking for a nice laid back hour or two out at the farm this is the perfect spot to stop. Here’s a look at the activities available:

SENSORY CORN BIN

(I love that this activity was in the barn so it was nice and shaded. Make sure you pay attention to the shape of the bin!)

MINI HAY MAZE

(I enjoyed watching my boys play hide and seek together.)

PLAY AREA

(While waiting for a hayride enjoy some fun on the slide.)

PETTING ZOO

(Purchase food and feed the animals, it’s so adorable to watch the little ones reactions.)

SORGHUM MAZE

HAY RIDE

(Be sure to ask questions because you can learn so much. We learned the difference between straw and hay.)

PICK YOUR OWN PUMPKIN

After having a conversation with Mrs. Cosgrove I was impressed by how they are sticking to their routes and focusing on the educational aspect of farming. There is a huge disconnection between kids and what they know about farms and where food is actually produced. It’s great to see a working farms offer activities and educational events in order to provide opportunity for children to see where food comes from, and get a small taste of farm life.

While at the fall festival I learned that Horsmon Farm also sells fresh meat; chicken, pork and beef. They raise Black Angus Cattle, pasture raised pigs and free range chickens. You can make purchases by appointment. For more information visit their site: http://www.horsmonfarm.com/meat-prices.html
