We had the chance to attend this year’s annual Lattes and Lambs event at National Colonial Farm to celebrate opening season for the Accokeek foundation. If you have never been to Lattes With Lambs before it is definitely an event that you will want to mark your calendar for next year. Around March every year the farm welcomes new Hog Island Lambs and Milking Devon calves; to mark the occasion and share these adorable and frolicking friends the farms hosts Lattes With Lambs in April. This event offers a great opportunity to welcome the new babies, ask questions and learn all about the farm.
We started the day off with donuts and lattes of course. There was a selection of lattes to choose from caramel, vanilla and mocha and even a selection of donuts for sale. We sat at a picnic table nibbled on our tasty treats while enjoying the beautiful views of the farm.
Next, we went off on an adventure around the farm. My boys really enjoyed seeing all the animals; especially the little babies. They were really fascinated to watch live demonstrations of sheep shearing and having the opportunity to learn through hands on experience with making wool from shearing to skirting and felting to spinning.
We also got to learn how to make butter and even take home a sample jar to enjoy later. There were plenty of crafts, activities and games to keep the little ones busy for hours.
One of our favorite parts of the day was meeting Nigel; an adorable lamb that the farm has taken care of since he was a baby. At this year’s event they put on puppet shows about his story and even knighted the lamb as Sir Nigel. It was one of the most adorable things I have ever seen.
If you missed Lattes With Lambs, don’t worry there’s always next year. Plus Colonial Farm is open for the season and has regular visiting hours and a schedule of activities throughout the spring and summer. Don’t miss Green History Saturdays and Colonial Farm Life on Sundays. The farm also has a wonderful museum that demonstrates 18th century agriculture. National Colonial Farms is a part of Piscataway Park; the park has a public fishing pier and two boardwalks over fresh water tidal wetlands, a variety of nature trails, meadows, and woodland areas.
