The Show

We were swept away by this “Practical Perfect” Disney and Mackintosh’s version of Mary Poppins at Olney Theatre Center. This enchanting and heartwarming tale takes you on a magical adventure as you step into the story of the Banks family; a chaotic family who is in much need of a new nanny. The Bank’s children Jane and Michael express their desires for the perfect caregiver by writing a letter and sharing it with their stern father. However, Mr. Banks is not so impressed and insists on someone strict for the job. He tears the letter up and tosses it into the fireplace. Moments later, a young woman named Mary Poppins mysteriously appears as a call to the advertisement the children wrote. The unique nanny has tricks up her sleeve that playfully teach the children import life lessons in a fun way. Mary Poppins takes the children on many memorable and magical journeys. Simple outings of ordinary walks in the park are turned into extraordinary adventures. Mary Poppins effect even reaches the grown-ups who learn “anything can happen if you let it.” Her radiating warmth and gentle compassion shows the family that happiness isn’t about money or worldly things; it’s about the love of your family. In the end the Banks finds that she’s the answer to their prayers, even if in the most peculiar way.

The Experience

This energetic and upbeat musical captured our attention and mesmerized us. The show is surprisingly around two and half hours. Never once did it feel long though! The scene changes are quick and a part of the story, as if a part of the magic. I was impressed with the clever use of illusion. I love that Mary Poppins takes charge as she pulls some pretty interesting things out of little bag of tricks. The mechanics used in the show are spectacular. I love how with a snap of a finger a room is tidied up. I think my four year old sons favorite part about the show was the puppetry. From the adorable animated little dog to humorous Penguins or Pigeons in flight to Kites sailing, you are sure to love the creative use of puppets too. The choreography was another delightful surprise. The dance numbers especially, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “Step in Time” were so much fun. I wanted to stand up and dance and sing along. If you are looking for Mary Poppins to point out her toes, open her umbrella and take flight with the change of the wind, you are in luck. She is surely the magical nanny of your childhood.  It was amazing to watch the seamless flight as Mary Poppins soared above our heads. The professional level of acting, singing, dancing, costuming, choreograph and music will surely leave you feeling the show is “practically perfect in every way.”
